DESCRIPTION:Prof. Benno Nigg \nDISTINGUISHED LECTURE IN BIOLOGICAL ENGINEE
RING\n\nAbstract:\nFor a long time\, the quality of running shoes has been
assessed using impact loading and foot pronation. However\, these predict
ors have been shown not to be very predictive. Recently\, our group has pr
oposed new paradigms to understand running\, running performance and runni
ng injuries. The proposed paradigms include\n\n	Muscle Tuning (Muscles pre
pare themselves (tune) based on the expected force input to minimize soft
tissue vibrations).\n	Functional Groups (Groups of subjects with similar c
haracteristics and similar reactions to interventions).\n	Preferred Moveme
nt Path (A movement path assumed to be associated with minimal energy dema
nd).\n	Comfort Filter (A strategy to select footwear products).\n\nUsing t
hese new paradigms appropriate shoes can be assigned to runners.\n\nBio:\n
Benno Nigg was born in Switzerland\, and studied Nuclear Physics at the ET
H Zurich\, and received his PhD from the same institution in 1975. He was
the Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory at the ETH Zurich. In 1981 Dr.
Nigg accepted an invitation to move to the University of Calgary\, where
he founded\, developed and was director of the Human Performance Laborator
y\, a multi-disciplinary Research Center concentrating on the study of the
human body and its locomotion. Dr. Nigg has received many awards and reco
gnitions\, including the Olympic Order\, honorary degrees from the Univers
ities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and an honorary professorship from the Uni
versity of Shanghai. Dr. Nigg is an honorary member of the ISB. His resear
ch concentrates on human locomotion with main emphasis on mobility and lon
gevity and its application to movement related products such as orthoses\,
shoe insoles\, sport shoes\, surfaces and sport equipment.\n
