DESCRIPTION:Dr. Corniela Lawson\, University of Bath \n"Is there a future
for open science? Sharing and research progress in scientific research "\n
\nAbstract:\n\nSharing of information\, data and materials between scienti
sts has been described as crucial for the replication\, validation and adv
ancement of research\, and recent years have seen a policy push towards op
en science and open data that seeks to enable wider use of research inform
ation and\, in extension\, more advancement and innovation (The Royal Soci
 ety\, 2012\; Knowledge Exchange\, 2014\; Digital Science\, 2016\; Owens\,
2016).\nHowever\, open sharing is still relatively rare and sharing is ins
tead largely reliant on direct exchanges and agreements between scientists
. Also\, we do not know whether sharing of information\, data and material
s actually leads to advancement of research. Most importantly\, the motiva
tions and agreements regarding sharing may have differential effects on wh
ether sharing can lead to advancement.\nIn this talk I will present result
s of two working papers that build on a survey of 2000 academics in Japan\
, Germany and the UK. The first investigates generalised vs. reciprocal ex
change between scientists\, i.e. investigates the agreements under which s
haring happens. The second part then looks at how agreements and goals imp
act the outcome of sharing\, namely whether it led to progress or innovati
on in research. Lessons for the future of open science are drawn.\n
