DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr Francisco Taveira-Pinto\, Faculty of Engineering\, Hy
draulics\, Water Resources and Environment Division\, Sea Energy Studies G
roup\, University of Porto\, Portugal\nAbstract: The Portuguese coast is h
ighly energetic. For that reason\, engineering research is quite active in
developing solutions for solving problems related with harbor safety and
coastal defense\, to protect assets\, coastal areas and population.\nLesso
ns from the deployment of classical protection solutions are being used to
develop new soft protection techniques\, by means of hydro-morphological
studies as well as physical and numerical approaches. Also because of the
high level of energy presented on the Portuguese coast\, marine renewable
energies have huge potential and can play a key role in a blue and sustain
able economy. Waves and offshore wind are strategic resources for Portugal
. However\, their development brings relevant challenges for the conceptio
n\, design\, construction and operation of marine infrastructure. These ch
allenges require innovative approaches in both physical and numerical mode
lling of marine hydraulics and fluid-structure interaction.\nThe presentat
ion deals with some examples of challenges and opportunities related to Co
astal Engineering and Marine Renewable Energy research studies\, on the ba
sis of concluded and ongoing works\, carried out at the Hydraulics Laborat
ory of the Hydraulics\, Water Resources and Environment Division (SHRHA) o
f the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering\, Univers
ity of Porto\, Portugal.\n\nShort bio: F. Taveira-Pinto is Full Professor
of the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering of the U
niversity of Porto (FEUP)\, as well as Director of its Hydraulics Water Re
sources & Environment Division\, Member of the board of the Hydraulics and
Water Resources Institute and head of the Research Group on Sea Energy. H
e is currently President of the Portuguese Water Resources Association (AP
RH).\nFormerly he was Chairman of the Coastal and Maritime Committee of th
e International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research
(IAHR) and International Secretary of the European Union for Coastal Cons
ervation (EUCC-The Coastal Union). He is Editor of the Journal of Integrat
ed Coastal Zone Management\, and member of the editorial board of the Jour
nal of Coastal Conservation\, Management and Planning\, and of the Journal
of Applied Water Engineering and Research (JAWER)\, as well as reviewer o
 f several other journals.\nWith over 200 publications\, 73 of them at inte
rnational journals\, his research expertise is in the field of coastal and
maritime engineering. His current research focus is on physical modelling
of marine infrastructure and on marine renewable energy. Within the Civil
Engineering Doctoral Programme and the Integrated Master of Civil Enginee
ring\, he has supervised 7 PhD Thesis and 42 Master Thesis.
