DESCRIPTION:Dr Danièle Rod\, Swiss Polar Institute @EPFL\, ACE expedition
2017\n\nShort biography:\nDanièle Rod works at the Swiss Polar Institute
(SPI) and is a political scientist by training. Before coordinating the A
ntarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) from 2015-2017\, she spent her
career working for science funding organisations (FNSF\, ERC) and science
policy organisations (SERI). She has worked for the Swiss National Science
Foundation and managed international research programmes and partnerships
for 10 years. From 2011\, she was in charge of the Education (Erasmus) an
d Science (Horizon 2020) agreements at the Mission of Switzerland to the E
U\nAbstract:\nThe Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) was organise
d by the new Swiss Polar Institute. It circled the Antarctic continent and
most of its sub-antarctic islands over a period of 3 months from December
2016 to March 2017 supporting 22 projects and almost 150 scientists from
18 countries. Conceived as an opportunity to better characterise the role
of the islands in the Southern Ocean as well as providing circumpolar mea
surements of many variables in a single summer the cruise offered the oppo
rtunity to link physical and biological measurements in air\, water and on
land.\nAs well as vertical profiles at fixed stations using both CTDs and
radio sondes\, there were also continuous underway measurements of phytop
lankton\, surveys of airborne particles and aerosols\,  collection of pla
stics\, bird and whale surveys\, measurements of trace metal availability
and trace gases\, studies on the evolution of flora and fauna   as well a
s investigations into palaeoclimate from ice and peat cores. Linking of th
e data sets and joint analyses will promote a more holistic understanding
of dynamic change in the Southern Ocean and help provide baselines for fut
ure measurements.\nDuring the presentation we will present the vision behi
nd the expedition and its implementation\, outline the journey and main sc
ientific experiments performed over its three months journey and give insi
ghts into the follow-up work and legacy of this unique expedition.\n
