 enz M. Hilty is Professor at the Department of Informatics\, University of
  Zurich\, and Head of the Informatics and Sustainability Research Group at
  Empa Materials Science and Technology\, St. Gallen. He also serves as Sus
 tainability Delegate of the Executive Board of the University of Zurich an
 d Affiliated Professor at CESC\, the Center for Sustainable Communications
  at KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Stockholm\, where he teaches witho
 ut travelling physically. His research is focused on conceptual frameworks
  and quantiative models of (positive and negative) impacts of the digitali
 zation on sustainable development. He is the initiator of the internationa
 l conference series ICT4S\, Information and Communication Technologies for
  Sustainability.\nAbstract:\nAfter some introductory examples of positve a
 nd negative impacts of the digital transformation on energy consumption an
 d related greenhouse gas emissions\, the talk will present the results of 
 a new study on “Opportunities and Risks of Digitalization for Climate Pr
 otection in Switzerland“ with the time horizon of 2025. The study includ
 ed both the greenhouse gas footprint of the ICT sector from a life cycle p
 erspective and the greenhouse gas abatement potential in application domai
 ns such as transport\, buildings or demand-side management for electricity
 . The study has been conducted at UZH in cooperation with WWF and Swisscom
 .\n
