  - Alessio Ferrari\, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne\, (Switze
rland)\; Università degli Studi di Palermo\, (Italy) - Domenico Gallipoli
\, Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour\, (France)  - Cristina Jom
 mi\, Technische Universiteit Delft\, (Netherlands) - Lyesse Laloui\, Éco
le Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) - Marianna Pirone\,
Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (Italy) - Enrique Romero\, U
niversitat Polytècnica de Catalunya\, (Spain) -  Giacomo Russo\, Univers
ità degli Studi di Cassino (Italy) - Lorenzo Sanavia\, Università degli
studi di Padova (Italy) - Tom Schanz\, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany)
 - Alessandro Tarantino\, University of Strathclyde (United Kingdom) - Davi
d Toll\, University of Durham (United Kingdom).\nIn the framework of the M
arie-Curie Innovative Training Networks project TERRE (www.terre-etn.com)\
, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) has hosted a Doct
oral School dedicated to Unsaturated Soil Mechanics. The organizers Alessi
o Ferrari (EPFL) and Alessandro Tarantino (University of Strathclyde) wish
to acknowledge the support of the European Commission via the Marie-Curie
Innovative Training Networks (ITN-ETN) project TERRE ‘Training Engineer
s and Researchers to Rethink Geotechnical Engineering for a low carbon fut
ure’ (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015-675762) and the TC 106 of ISSMGE.\nThe Doctora
l School was held at the EPFL campus in Lausanne (CH) by the side of the L
ake Geneva from 4th April to 7th April 2017. The School aimed to spread kn
owledge about Unsaturated Soil Mechanics with lectures given by internatio
nally renowned experts. Twelve presentations took place during this four-d
ay school giving to the students a broad overview of the main topics and r
elative applications.\nThe school was attended by 56 participants coming f
rom all over the world (17 different countries were represented).\n\nThe w
elcome lecture was held by Prof. Lyesse Laloui (EPFL) together with Profs.
Alessandro Tarantino and Alessio Ferrari who introduced the concepts rela
ted to the project TERRE. Prof. David Toll (University of Durham) introduc
ed the activities carried out by TC 106 of the ISSMGE.\nThe first part of
the school covered the fundamentals of mechanical and hydraulic behavior o
f unsaturated soils featuring presentations from A. Tarantino (Basic conce
pts)\, A. Ferrari (Mechanical behaviour) and D. Toll (Hydraulic behaviour)
.\n\nThe second part of the school highlighted the constitutive modelling
of unsaturated soils\, featuring the following presentations: Effective st
ress concept for unsaturated soils (Prof. L. Laloui)\, and two sessions de
dicated to the description of constitutive models used for unsaturated soi
ls (Prof. D. Gallipoli).\nThe third part detailed the experimental techniq
ues used in the laboratory to characterize unsaturated soils. This part wa
s held by Profs. A. Ferrari\, G. Russo and E. Romero. At the end of the se
cond day\, a visit to the EPFL Laboratory of Soil Mechanics was done. Afte
r the laboratory visit\, a barbecue took place.\nThe fourth part was dedic
ated to engineering applications\, such as THM problems\, engineered barri
ers\, slope stability\, soil-atmosphere interaction in embankments and flo
od embankments. This part was presented by Profs. L. Sanavia\, T. Schanz\,
  M. Pirone\, Y.J. Cui and C. Jommi.\nThe final part was dedicated to the f
ield visit to the Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory\, located closed
to St. Ursanne\, in the north of Switzerland. The visit detailed all the a
ctivities that are performed in such a laboratory\, with particular emphas
 is to radioactive waste disposals.
