DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ludovic Di Biaggio\, SKEMA Business School\n\n"Regional
Alignment and Performance"\n\nAbstract\nRecent studies observe the increas
ing within country divergence in regional performance. This paper develops
the concept of regional alignment to suggest that synergistic relations b
etween scientific expertise\, technological specialization and industry co
mposition of regions affect local firms’ productivity. Using a spatial e
conometrics framework\, we test the convergence process across 93 French d
epartments (NUTS3) over the period 2000-2011. We derive our empirical spec
ifications from the semi-endogenous dynamics of productivity as proposed b
y Jones (1995) and extend the model to integrate spatial dependence of pro
ductivity growth. Our results suggest a convergence process in the dynamic
s of regional productivity. Interestingly we find a direct as well as an i
ndirect effect of regional alignment on the rate of regional productivity
growth. If the direct effect is unambiguously positive\, the indirect effe
cts of regional alignment are mixed. These results suggest that regional a
lignment tends to strengthen the influence of R&D on productivity on the o
ne hand\, but\, on the other hand\, reinforces the convergence process bet
 ween regions.
