 \nIn this mini-course we shall present some applications of étale homotop
 y theory to the study of Diophantine equations. We show how étale homotop
 y theory provides a very general and natural way to obstruct solutions to 
 Diophantine equations and how these obstructions give a unified descriptio
 n to the known obstructions to the local-global principle. An exposition t
 o modern homotopy theory will be provided as well and will take up the fir
 st half of the mini-course.
