DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr Valter Carvelli\, Rofessor of Solid and Structural Me
chanics\, Politecnico di Milano\, Italy\nFiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) co
mposites\, in recent years\, have known a widespread diffusion in several
construction applications. Properties of FRP are relatively known to scien
tists and engineers\, but there are still many concerns about their durabi
lity and their performance in real environment conditions.\nThe talk inten
ds to focus on two durability related aspects: the degradation of the mech
anical performance of pultruded composites adopted as cladding in building
constructions\; the thermo-mechanical behavior of GFRP reinforced concret
e structural elements at elevated temperatures.\nThe first includes and ex
tensive experimental investigation on the mechanical performance of lamina
tes with different resin systems\, and the description of an Arrhenius rel
ated methodology for the prediction of their long-term behavior.\nThe seco
nd topic deals with thin and thick concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP reb
ars exposed to elevated temperature and bending loading. Experimental meas
urements are considered to assess the accuracy of analytical and numerical
  predictions of their thermo-mechanical response.\nBio : Valter Carvelli i
s Professor of Solid and Structural Mechanics at Politecnico di Milano sin
ce 2007. He was Assistant Professor in the same university since 2002. He
obtained the Ph.D. in Structural Mechanics at University of Bologna.\nThe
main research interests are in the field of the mechanical behavior of com
posite materials reinforced with long fibers and textiles\, with particula
r attention to their application in constructions.\nHe is author of more t
han 100 papers in peer-review international journals and international con
ference proceedings and author of one book. Many of his publications are d
edicated to the experimental measurement and numerical prediction of the m
echanical behavior of composites\, with particular attention to the fatigu
e response and to the reinforcement of concrete structures.\nHe was resear
ch fellow in some Universities in Europe and Japan.\nHe is member of the E
xecutive Committee of the European Society of Composite Materials. He is a
ctive in several research projects with national and European grants for t
he investigation and industrial application of composite materials.
