DESCRIPTION:Prof. George M. Whitesides\, Harvard University\, Cambridge\,
MA (USA)\nDISTINGUISHED LECTURE IN BIOLOGICAL ENGINEERING\n\nAbstract:\n(A
bout the speaker)\nProf. Whitesides is one of the most influential living
chemists (some say the most)\, best known for his work in NMR spectroscopy
 \, organometallic chemistry\, molecular self-assembly\, soft lithography\,
  micro fabrication\, microfluidics and nanotechnology.\n\nHis laboratory i
s famous for focusing on fundamental questions to solve what many had defi
ned as virtually intractable problems\, a strategy that has won him more t
 han 1\,200 papers\, 100+ patents and the co-founding of 12 companies\, inc
 luding Genzyme\, GelTex\, Theravance\, Surface logic\, Nano-Terra and WMR
Biomedical. Much of his current work involves developing diagnostic tools
that are low cost\, simple to use\, and durable enough to withstand condi
tions in rural areas of the developing world\, while being simple enough t
o be read by a layman. Many of you will be familiar with his “outline me
thod” to write scientific papers (ref. 1).\n\nReferences / recommended r

nGeorge M. Whitesides was born August 3\, 1939 in Louisville\, KY (USA). H
e received an A.B. degree from Harvard University in 1960 and a Ph.D. from
the California Institute of Technology (with J.D. Roberts) in 1964. He wa
s a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology fro
m 1963 to 1982. He joined the Department of Chemistry of Harvard Universit
y in 1982\, and was Department Chairman 1986-89\, and Mallinckrodt Profess
or of Chemistry from 1982-2004. He is now the Woodford L. and Ann A. Flowe
 rs University Professor.\n\nPractical note:\nAnticipating unusually high t
urnout some 20 additional chairs will be set up in room SV1717 - a larger
venue could unfortunately not be secured (sorry).\nFurthermore\, the talk
will be video broadcast to EPFL room SV3715 (15 chairs\; SV Camipro access
required)\, and recorded.\nLive streaming to Campus Biotech and Sion camp
uses is also being arranged\, and we are told that it might be possible to
catch it from your computer as well - check out http://go.epfl.ch/sti-vid
yo and contact Dominique Quatravaux (Cc) asap for advice and practical det
ails.\n\nWe are most grateful for all the help provided by the SAVE servic
e (Christophe Barras\, Michael Gachoud) and STI-IT (Dominique Quatravaux).
