DESCRIPTION:Andrea C. Ferrari\nCarbon based materials play a major role in
  today's science and technology. Carbon is a very versatile element\, whic
 h can crystallise in the form of diamond or graphite. Great excitement has
  followed the discovery of new forms of carbon\, including fullerenes\, na
 notubes and single layer graphene. This fuels the enormous amount of resea
 rch in the ever-growing field of nanotechnology. In recent years\, there h
 ave been continuous important advances in the science of carbon such as ch
 emical vapour deposition of diamond\, the discovery of fullerenes and carb
 on nanotubes\, and the production of isolated single layer graphene. There
  are also many non-crystalline carbons\, known as amorphous carbons and na
 nostructured carbons (mixture of amorphous and graphitic carbon\, nanotube
 s and fullerenes). Diamond-like carbons play an important role\, being a k
 ey element in numerous everyday-life applications\, in the information tec
 hnology\, telecommunications and automotive market. Their great versatilit
 y arises from the strong dependence of the physical properties on the rati
 o of sp2 (graphite-like) to sp3 (diamond-like) bonds. Here I will review t
 he main deposition methods\, characterisation techniques and applications 
 of graphene\, nanotubes and diamond-like carbons.\n\nAndrea C. Ferrari ear
 ned a PhD in electrical engineering from Cambridge University\, after a La
 urea in nuclear engineering from Politecnico di Milano\, Italy. He is the 
 head of the Nanomaterials and Spectroscopy group at the Department of Engi
 neering and Nanoscience Centre of Cambridge University. He is a Professor 
 of Nanotechnology\, a Royal Society Wofson Research Merit Award Holder\, a
 nd a Fellow of Pembroke College\, Cambridge.  His research interests incl
 ude nanomaterials growth\, modelling\, characterization\, and devices. In 
 particular\, he focuses on graphene\, nanotubes\, diamond-like carbon\, an
 d nanowires for applications in electronics and photonics. He has publishe
 d over 230 papers and given over 200 invited\, keynote\, plenary presentat
 ions to international conferences. He has over 16000 citations to his pape
 rs and H index 53.
