DESCRIPTION:Prof. Ingmar H. Riedel-Kruse\, Stanford University\, Stanford\
 , CA (USA)\nBIOENGINEERING SEMINAR\n\nAbstract:\nModern biotechnology gets
increasingly powerful to manipulate and measure microscopic biological pr
ocesses. Nevertheless\, no platform exists to truly interact and program w
ith these processes\, certainly not with the convenience that we are accus
tomed to from our electronic smart devices.  I will provide the rational
for such “Interactive Bio-Technology” and conceptualize biotic process
ing unit (BPUs). I will demonstrate multiple platforms based on photo-tact
ic Euglena cells\, e.g.\, biotic video games\, scalable biology cloud expe
rimentation labs\, tangible museum exhibits\, and swarm programming langua
ges.  I will demonstrate how we can expand the reach of synthetic biology
towards multicellular structures: an orthogonal set of genetically encode
d heterophilic cell-cell adhesion pairs enables self-assembled patterns at
the 5 um scale. Optogenetic control of homophilic cell-cell adhesion enab
les the programming of biofilm patterns at the 100 um scale. Applications
of our work aim to advance smart-materials science\, STEM education\, and
the scientific method.\n\nBio:\nIngmar H. Riedel-Kruse is an Assistant Pro
