DESCRIPTION:Andrew Clifton\n\nAndy Clifton (Ph.D.\, ETHZ 2007) is a Senior
Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory near Boulder\, Color
ado. Responsible for wind measurement using towers and remote sensing\, he
works to improve turbine power production models and understand how clima
te variability affects wind resources.\nWind power looks set to supply mor
e electricity in Switzerland after the 2011 moratorium on nuclear power. B
ut how much electricity can be generated from the wind\, and how does the
wind climate in Switzerland compare to other areas? In this talk\, I will
present an introduction to measuring wind resources and estimating turbine
power output. Using examples from tall towers in Switzerland and Colorado
\, I will show how wind characteristics can vary\, and ask - does complex
terrain mean complex flow? Finally\, a method to better predict turbine pe
rformance in complex flows will be presented.
