DESCRIPTION:Ismael Al-Amoudi (University of Reading & Centre d'Ontologie S
ociale de l'EPFL)\nTitle: Relations of authority\, obligations and roles:\
nontological insights from the Occupy Geneva movement.\n\nAbstract: The pu
rpose of this paper is to explore the import of an ontologically informed
understanding of social roles for a study of relations of authority and of
those social networks they presuppose and\, in turn\, constitute. Authori
ty is analysed as a relation based on legitimacy. The latter is in turn an
alysed both in terms of authorisation and of obligations. Such a perspecti
ve emphasises the import of identities and in particular social identities
and social roles in the constitution of relations of authority. Moreover\
, our ontological study indicates that those relations of authority that a
re observable in any given organisation are themselves rooted in a wider
 – and typically neglected – network of (significant) others whose expe
cted attitudes is commonly used as a compass for agents engaging in relati
ons of authority.\n\nThe Centre d’Ontologie Sociale - established at EPF
L in 2010 - is launching a series of seminars on social ontology as broadl
y defined\, the Brownbag Lausanne Ontology Workshop (BLOW). Guest-speakers
drawn will discuss their latest research in a spirit of intellectual exch
ange and openness. Attendance is open to all and should be of particular i
nterest to researchers in the social sciences\, including doctoral student
s.\nMeetings are scheduled at lunchtime (12h15-13h45 in room GCB330) on th
e last Wednesday of the month during term-time. Sandwiches and soft drinks
will be available.\n\nForthcoming dates for 2012: Wednesdays 25th April a
 nd 30th May.\n
