 ions: Great person or great team?"\n\nAbstract This paper examines star sc
 ientists and team performance in the context of scientific research collab
 orations and academic entrepreneurship. We employ a theoretically-driven m
 atching model of value creation to estimate complementarities underlying t
 eam formation. Through an extension of the matching model\, we calculate a
  “contribution interval” of each party to the relationship\, that is\,
  the upper and the lower bound of the value that star principal investigat
 ors and their teams (“constellations”) can expect to appropriate from 
 the joint output. When comparing the upper bound of value (also known in t
 he literature as “added value”)\, results show that\, on average\, sta
 rs’ added value is higher than constellations’ added value. However\, 
 when comparing the full value intervals\, the most common situation is one
  where intervals overlap and there is no clear dominance of value contribu
 tion by the star or the constellation. Thus\, our analysis raises the sali
 ence of team selection and the team’s impact on stars’ performance giv
 en that it is most often a communal effort underlying value creation.
