DESCRIPTION:Alexandre Goy\nThe EPFL Photonics Chapter (EPC) is very plea
sed to announce and cordially invite you to our monthly 'Pizza-optics-bee
r' (POB) seminar on October 4th 2017 (Wednesday) at 18:15 in the roo
m CM 1 120.\n\nThis month we will have the pleasure to host Alexandre Go
 y with the presentation entitled\n\n"Learning optical tomography"\n\nFor
organizational purposes (if you want to eat pizza!)\, please confirm your
participation using this Doodle.\n \nHope to see you there\,\nThe team
of the EPFL Photonics Chapter\n \n \nAbstract:\nOptical tomography is an
imaging technique that aims at reconstructing the three-dimensional distr
ibution of the refractive index of a sample. This can be used\, for exampl
e\, in biology to study the structure of cells in three dimensions and how
cell get organized in space. In order to reconstruct the refractive index
\, the object is illuminated with plane waves at different incidence angle
 s. For each incident wave\, the scattered field is measured. By using a si
mple linear inversion method\, it is possible to retrieve the refractive i
ndex from these measurements. However\, this conventional method (based on
the Rytov approximation) does not account for multiple scattering and is
thus limited to weakly scattering object\, i.e. object displaying weak ind
ex contrast.\nIn this talk\, we will present a recent method called Learni
ng tomography (LT) that includes multiple scattering and thus allows us to
expand the limits of optical tomography. We will explain the working prin
ciple of LT and show its advantages over conventional linear techniques.
