DESCRIPTION:Saverio Bolognani\, Automatic Control Laboratory\, ETH\nI wil
 l show how most of the real-time control tasks in power systems (voltage r
 egulation\, economic re-dispatch\, line congestion mitigation\, etc.) can 
 be reformulated as an online optimization problem on a nonlinear manifold.
 \n\nIn contrast to the conventional approach where an optimal power flow s
 olution is repeatedly computed before being applied to the system\, we aim
  at designing an adaptive feedback controller that steers the system in re
 al time to the optimal operating point\, while satisfying the operational 
 constraints along its trajectory.\n\nI will present some of the theory tha
 t is needed in order to design such a controller. I will then discuss the 
 main features of this solution\, with a specific focus on robustness\, fea
 sibility\, and tracking performance. Finally\, I will discuss some practic
 al aspects of the design and of the implementation of such a control schem
 e.\n\nBio: Saverio Bolognani received the Ph.D. degree in Information Eng
 ineering from the University of Padova\, Italy\, 2011. In 2006-2007\, he w
 as a visiting student at the University of California at San Diego. In 201
 3-2014 he was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Laboratory for Information a
 nd Decision Systems of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambri
 dge (MA).\n\nHe is currently a Senior Researcher at the Automatic Control 
 Laboratory at ETH Zurich. His research interests include the application o
 f networked control system theory to smart power distribution networks\, d
 istributed control\, estimation\, and optimization\, and cyber-physical sy
 stems.
