DESCRIPTION:Prof. Alfio Quarteroni\nIn this presentation I will highlight
the great potential offered by the interplay between data science and comp
utational science to efficiently solve real\nlife large scale problems. Th
e leading application that I will address is the numerical simulation of t
he heart function.\nThe motivation behind this interest is that cardiovasc
ular diseases unfortunately represent one of the leading causes of death i
n Western Countries.\nMathematical models based on first principles allow
the description of the blood motion in the human circulatory system\, as w
ell as the interaction between\nelectrical\, mechanical and fluid-dynamica
l processes occurring in the heart. This is a classical environment where
multi-physics and multi-scale processes have to be addressed.\nAppropriate
numerical strategies can be devised to allow for an effective description
of the fluid in large and medium size arteries\, the analysis of physiolo
gical and pathological conditions\, and the simulation\, control and shape
optimization of assisted devices or surgical prostheses.\nThis presentati
on will address some of these issues and a few representative applications
  of clinical interest.\n\nProgram:\n17:15 Presentation\, Jan S. Hesthaven\
, Dean of the Faculty of Basic Sciences\n17:30 Alfio Quarteroni\, "Taking
 Mathematics to Heart"\nApéritif\n\nRegistration\n\nBiographie\nAlfio Quar
teroni is Director of the Chair of Modelling and Scientific Computing at t
he EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology)\, Lausanne (Switzerland)\,
since 1998.\nHe is the founder (and first director) of MOX at Politecnico
of Milan (2002) and MATHICSE at EPFL\, Lausanne (2010). He is co-founder
(and President) of MOXOFF\, a spin-off company at Politecnico of Milan (20
10).\nHe is author of 25 books\, editor of 9 books\, author of more than 3
00 papers published in international Scientific Journals and Conference Pr
oceedings\, member of the editorial board of 25 International Journals and
Editor in Chief of two book series published by Springer.\nHe has been an
invited or plenary speaker in more than 300 International Conferences and
Academic Departments\, in particular he has been invited speaker at ICM 2
002 in Beijing and plenary speaker at ICM 2006 in Madrid.\nAmong his award
s and honors are: the NASA Group Achievement Award for the pioneering work
in Computational Fluid Dynamics in 1992\, the Ghislieri prize\, 2013\, an
d the International Galileo Galilei prize for Sciences 2015. He is doctor
Honoris Causa in Naval Engineering from University of Trieste\, Italy\, 20
03\, SIAM Fellow (first row) since 2009\, IACM (International Association
of Computational Mechanics) Fellow since 2004. \,He is the recipient of th
e Galileian Chair from the Scuola Normale Superiore\, Pisa\, Italy \,2001\
, member of the Italian Academy of Science\, member of the European Academ
y of Science\, member of the Academia Europaea.\nHe is the Recipient of tw
o ERC Advanced Grants in 2008 and 2017 and of two ERC PoC (Proof of Concep
 t) grants in 2012 and 2015.\nHis research interests concern Mathematical M
odelling\, Numerical Analysis\, Scientific Computing\, and Application to:
fluid mechanics\, geophysics\, medicine and the improvement of sports per
formance. His research Group at EPFL has contributed to the preliminary de
sign of Solar Impulse\, the Swiss long-range experimental solar-powered ai
rcraft project\; his research group at EPFL has carried out the mathematic
al simulation for the optimisation of performances of the Alinghi yacht\,
the winner of two editions (2003 and 2007) of the America’s Cup.\n
