 science and engineering. My four years leading the Directorate for Mathema

 nd helped crystallized my view of fundamental research. I will discuss the
  importance of fundamental re- search in several contexts\, briefly descri
 be the ways in which the US NSF supports it\, and speculate on future pros
 pects.
