 ems group\, ABB \nAbstract: In this presentation\, authors review tasks o
 f the industrial research and formulate its key priorities for the power s
 ystems engineering in energy transition. We will first review various phys
 ical phenomena in power systems and those mathematical descriptions. We wi
 ll look at the problems from the vendor\, system operator\, and market par
 ticipant perspective. We will review existing and evolving power technolog
 ies and qualitatively assess the fitness of these to address challenges of
  the energy transition. Finally\, we make a deeper dive into specific plan
 ning problem and analysis. We conclude with provoking thoughts and rationa
 l summary.\n \nBio: Dr. Zima-Bockarjova leads power and energy systems g
 roup at ABB Corporate research center in Switzerland. She joined ABB in 20
 10 as a scientist. She was previously with ETH Zurich as a scientific assi
 stant (2005-2010) and a planning engineer with the strategy department of 
 Latvenergo in Latvia (2000-2004). She has over 17 years of professional ex
 perience with various aspects of power systems planning\, operation\, and 
 protection. Her work interests include reliable integration of intermitten
 t and distributed sources to the power grids and evolving landscape of pow
 er industry.
