DESCRIPTION:Aim: The National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCR) pro
 gramme seeks to promote innovative\, top-tier research initiatives with a 
 long-term perspective. NCCR research projects must be of national signific
 ance and promote the sustainable development of competence centres and str
 uctural capacities at higher education institutions. To this end\, NCCR le
 aders\, in collaboration with their Home Institutions (HI) (and with other
  contributing institutions in the network)\, have to develop a vision of h
 ow they plan to renew\, optimise and strengthen the research structures wi
 thin the institutions and in Switzerland during the NCCR’s funding perio
 d\, focusing on a clearly designated and thematically defined research top
 ic of national interest. When making its final selection based on an SNSF 
 shortlist of outstanding proposals in both scientific and structural terms
 \, the Swiss government (EAER/SERI) will give a high priority to initiativ
 es that have an affinity with the goals set in the “Digitalisation Actio
 n Plan”. The available funding will permit the establishment of presumab
 ly 5 to 6 new NCCRs\, which can expect to receive a SNSF contribution of u
 p to CHF 20 million each for the first four-year phase. The new NCCRs will
  commence their activity in early 2020.\n\nDeadline for Outline Proposal: 
 February 1\, 2018\n\n\nFunding of up to CHF 20 million per NCCR for the fi
 rst 4-year period. In addition to federal funds\, NCCRs receive funding fr
 om the higher education institutions and from third parties.\nDuration: NC
 CRs may run for up to twelve years\, and their duration is divided into fo
 ur-year-long phases.\nSubject: All\, preferably in coherence with the Fede
 ral Action Plan for Digitalisation.\nSpecificities: Home institutions must
  be recognized Swiss higher education research centres (ETH domain\, highe
 r education universities and institutions\, and research centres of nation
