DESCRIPTION:Dr. François Vuille\nDirector Development at the Energy Cente
r\,\nEPFL Lausanne\nChE-605 - Highlights in Energy Research seminar series
\n\nElectric vehicles (EVs) have the potential to bring environmental\, su
pply security and socio-economic benefits. However\, they may also have ne
gative impacts. For example\, they could lead to an in increase CO2 emissi
ons in case of a high share of coal in the electricity mix\, or a reductio
n in employment\, since EVs require less maintenance than gasoline vehicle
 s. They can also haver an impact on the electric grid related to a possibl
e increase of peak power demand. The overall impact of EV penetration is h
ighly context dependent\, and should be assessed within a comprehensive fr
amework. In this lecture\, we will discuss the overall economic and enviro
nmental performance of EVs and compare these to both incumbent ICE technol
ogies and alternative novel technologies such as fuel cell vehicles. We wi
ll also discuss the global EV market and the reason why the EV penetration
differs widely between regions. This will lead us to determine the socio-
economic barriers to deployment.\n\nThe seminar can be followed remotely b
y joining   the online Cisco WebEx meeting (connection possible 15 minut
es before the talk).\nSee here the documentation how to install the Cisco
WebEx add-on on your computer.\nIn case of problem\, you can contact our
