DESCRIPTION:Dr Philippe FAIST\, Caltech\nModern information-theoretic appr
oaches provide a promising avenue for extending the laws of thermodynamics
to the nano scale. Using such techniques\, we derive a fundamental minima
l thermodynamic cost of information processing. Our result is expressed in
terms of a new measure of information\, the coherent relative entropy\, w
hich obeys natural properties and reveals additional structure in the fami
ly of one-shot entropy measures. Our approach sheds light on the role of t
he observer in thermodynamics\, thus allowing to systematically analyze Ma
xwell demon-type situations\, and providing a step forward in understandin
g the extent of the universality of thermodynamics. We illustrate our resu
lts using a simple optomechanical setup.   A preprint is available at: ht
