DESCRIPTION:Prof. Nicolas Giuseppone\, University of Strasbourg France\nAb
stract: Making molecular machines that can be useful in the macroscopic wo
rld is a challenging long-term goal of nanoscience. Inspired by the protei
n machinery found in biological systems\, and based on the theoretical und
erstanding of the physics of motion at the nanoscale\, organic chemists ha
ve developed a number of molecules that can produce work when triggered by
various external chemical or physical stimuli. In particular\, basic mole
cular switches that commute between at least two thermodynamic minima and
more advanced molecular motors that behave as dissipative units working fa
r from equilibrium when fueled with external energy have been reported. Ho
wever\, the ultimate challenge of coordinating individual molecular motors
in a continuous mechanical process that can have a measurable effect at t
he macroscale has remained elusive until very recently. We will discuss ad
vances developed by our group on artificial molecular machines and involvi
ng their mechanical coupling within dynamic polymer systems. We will show
that it is now possible to amplify their individual motions to achieve mac
roscopic functions in materials. In particular\, we will present a dual-li
ght controlled system operating fully out-of-equilibrium\, and in which th
e integrated motions of two types of mechanically active units can be tune
 d by modulation of frequencies.\n \nSelected references:\n \n[1]   G.

he Research Federation on Materials and Nanoscience of Strasbourg. He rece
ived his PhD in asymmetric catalysis (laboratory of Prof. H.B. Kagan)\, pe
rformed a post-doctoral research in total synthesis (laboratory of Prof. K
.C. Nicolaou)\, and entered the field of supramolecular chemistry as a CNR
S researcher (laboratory of Prof. J.-M. Lehn). In 2008 he started his own
research group\, and was awarded an ERC Starting Grant from the European R
esearch Council in 2010. In 2013 he was nominated as a junior member of th
e Institut Universitaire de France (IUF)\, and promoted Distinguished Prof
essor at the University of Strasbourg in 2016.\nHis research interests are
focused on supramolecular chemistry\, molecular machines and functional m
 aterials.\n
