DESCRIPTION:Stefan A. Kobel\nCurrent in vitro systems are not only very in
 efficient in tracking and studying single stem cells over time\, but also 
 they cannot distinguish the fate of the daughter cells generated by these 
 single cells. This thesis addresses some of these shortcomings by developi
 ng miniaturized devices to handle and analyze single live stem cells.\n\nM
 y presentation will describe a micro-structured platform to passively capt
 ure and culture single hematopoietic stem cells and several microfluidic m
 odules to actively trap and manipulate single cells\, physically separate 
 their daughter cells and to analyze the gene expression of single cells.\n
 \nThe further integration of such microfluidic modules into multi-function
 al lab-on-a-chip devices will open the door to novel experimental paradigm
 s and promises novel insights in stem cell biology.\n\nThe presentation wi
 ll be followed by an aperitif.
