DESCRIPTION:Dr. M. Marsi\nThe study of quantum materials in out-of-equilib
rium conditions following excitation with ultrafast lasers represents one
of the novel research frontiers in condensed matter physics. With femtosec
ond optical pulses\, electronic and lattice degrees of freedom can be tran
siently decoupled\, giving the opportunity of stabilizing new states inacc
essible by quasi-adiabatic pathways.\n \nThis becomes particularly intere
sting for the study of strongly correlated materials\, since their rich ph
ase diagram often translates into an equally rich out-of-equilibrium behav
ior\; as well as for the study of topological matter\, where the unique fe
atures of Dirac fermions turn into peculiar photoconductivity properties a
fter ultrafast excitation. Selected studies of prototype Mott-Hubbard comp
ounds and topological materials will be discussed in more detail\; in part
icular\, it will be shown how the combination of different time-resolved e
 xperimental techniques - ARPES\, optical reflectivity\, FEL-based X-ray di
ffraction [1] – can give access to the evolution of both electrons and l
attice\, providing a complete picture of out-of-equilibrium quantum matter
