DESCRIPTION:Antoine Adamantidis\, Department of Neurology\, Inselspital\,
University of Bern\, Switzerland\nSleep is an essential component of anima
l behavior\, controlled by both circadian and homeostatic processes. The a
dvent of high-density electrophysiological recordings or imaging technolog
ies together with opto- & pharmaco-genetics techniques have triggered a sh
ift of consideration from a global to local\, cell-defined circuit signatu
res of sleep. Thus\, since the original discovery of hypothalamic centers
controlling both sleep and wakefulness\, current views now implicate typic
al brain oscillations as distinctive features of sleep and wake states tha
t reflect recurrent activity amongst neural circuits. This lecture will su
mmarize our investigation of the brain circuit mechanisms supporting sleep
and sleep functions including memory consolidation.\n
