DESCRIPTION:Paolo Tombesi\, Chair in Construction at the University of Mel
bourne\nIn spite of its revolutionary approach to design and construction\
, the industrial legacy of the Sydney Opera House has never been the subje
ct of systematic analysis. Whilst celebrating the genius of his conceiver
Jørn Utzon and sulking over the alleged cost overruns that made it the mo
st célèbre of all construction causes\, the literature remains aloof abo
ut the building’s contribution to the management of construction innovat
ion\, the consequent definition of sector policies\, and the role that pub
lic buildings have in their implementation. This lecture documents the met
hodological underpinnings of a series of research projects that have attem
pted to gauge the project’s relationship with its broader context as wel
l as its place in the history of technology and architectural practice. Th
e theory behind this work is that the value of design is seldom appreciate
d fully because it is difficult to measure it within the conventional proj
ect-based appraisal framework. The research makes an attempt to reach a be
tter balance between project costs and project benefits by extending the s
cope of the analysis to the industry at large.
