DESCRIPTION:By: Margo Seltzer - Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engine
ering and Applied Sciences\n\nAbstract:\nAs our computational infrastructu
re races gracefully forward into increasingly parallel multi-core and clus
tered systems\, our ability to easily produce software that can successful
ly exploit such systems continues to stumble. For years\, we've fantasized
about the world in which we'd write simple\, sequential programs\, add ma
gic sauce\, and suddenly have scalable\, parallel executions. We're not th
 ere. We're not even close.  I'll present a radical\, potentially crazy\na
 pproach to automatic scalability\, combining learning\, prediction\, and s
peculation  To date\, we've achieved shockingly good scalability and reas
onable speedup in limited domains\, but the potential is tantalizingly eno
rmous.\n\nBio:\nMargo Seltzer is the Herchel Smith Professor of Computer S
cience and the Faculty Director for the Center for Research on Computation
and\nSociety in Harvard's John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Appli
ed Sciences. Her research interests are in systems\, construed quite broad
ly: \nsystems for capturing and accessing provenance\, file systems\, dat
abases\, transaction processing systems\, storage and analysis of graph-st
ructured\ndata\, new architectures for parallelizing execution\, and syste
ms that apply technology to problems in healthcare.\n\nDr. Seltzer was a f
ounder and CTO of Sleepycat Software\, the makers of Berkeley DB\, and is
now an Architect at Oracle Corporation. \nShe received an A.B. degree in
Applied Mathematics from Harvard/Radcliffe College in 1983 and a Ph. D. in
Computer Science from the University of California\, Berkeley in 1992.\n\
