DESCRIPTION:Prof. Bernardo Sabatini\, Department of Neurobiology\, Harvard
Medical School\, Boston\, USA\nThe basal ganglia are essential for the ex
ecution of coordinated goal-oriented movements.  Within these evolutionar
ily conserved structures\, the activity of dopamine neurons has a privileg
ed ability to both facilitate the immediate execution of an action as well
as to increase the future expression of an action associated with reward.
Here we discuss the circuit and synaptic properties that mediate such e
ffects.  In particular\, we consider the concerted actions of multiple ne
urotransmitters released by individual neurons in triggering a coherent do
wnstream program.  We consider how such multitransmitter programs contrib
ute to the actions of dopaminergic neurons in the striatum and of basal ga
nglia output pathways to cortex and lateral habenula.  Our results indica
te that many fundamental aspects of synaptic transmission\, neurotransmitt
er identity\, and circuity modulation remain to be discovered.
