DESCRIPTION:Dr Pierre Gentine\, professor\, Gentine Lab\, Earth and Enviro
nmental Engineering Dept\, The Fu Foundation School of Engineering & Appli
 ed Science\, Columbia University\, New York\, USA - visiting professor @ E
THZ\nAbstract:\nThe continental carbon and water cycle are intimately coup
led through plant stomata. I will demonstrate that this has widespread imp
lications for the prediction of future water cycle and dryness changes and
also for the carbon cycle based on modeling experiments. I will then disc
uss model deficiencies in particular in terms of precipitation and plant w
ater stress and potential ways forward using remote sensing\, physical mod
els and machine learning.\n\nShort biography:\nPierre Gentine is Associate
Professor at Columbia University\, currently on sabbatical at ETH Zurich.
His research focuses on the continental hydrologic cycle including: land-
 atmosphere interactions\, ecohydrology\, remote sensing\, boundary layer a
nd convection. Pierre Gentine has won the NSF CAREER\, DOE Early Career an
d NASA New Investigator program awards\, as well as the AMS Meisinger awar
d (2016) and AGU Global Environmental Changes early career award (2017).
