 r Charles Masembe from the Makerere University in Kampala\, Uganda\, will 
 give a talk tomorrow at 16.30 in room GC D0 386 (ISRF) entitled "From cons
 ervation genetics of African wildlife to the conservation of farm animals:
  the NEXTGEN approach in Uganda". Charles Masembe works at the School of B
 iological Sciences\, for the Institute of Environment & Natural Resources 
 (MUIENR) at Makerere Univerity. He specialized in molecular genetics and v
 eterinary diagnostics in the epidemiology of important viral diseases of d
 omestic animals and wildlife\, mainly Foot-and-Mouth Disease and African S
 wine Fever. MUIENR is developing research capable of using state-of-the ar
 t technologies for improving agricultural production\, food security and p
 overty alleviation.\nMUIENR is also a partner together with LASIG in the F
 P7 NEXTGEN project (http://nextgen.epfl.ch) on disease resistance and loca
 l adaptation in Ugandan cattle. MUIENR and LASIG closely collaborated to e
 stablish the sampling design of the Ankole cattle breed across Uganda. In 
 addition\, Sylvie Stucki\, LASIG's PhD student\, visited Makerere Universi
 ty in January 2011 to participate to training activities and give a lectur
 e on GIS aspects for the spatial analysis of genetic data.\nMUIENR\, LASIG
  (EPFL\, ENAC) and the Jensen Lab (EPFL\, SV) presently collaborate in the
  context of a seed money project (PIGDIV) funded by the EPFL Cooperation &
  Development Center CODEV.
