DESCRIPTION:By: Pedro Moreno Sanchez from Purdue University\n\nAbstract:\n
Path-based transaction (PBT) networks\, which settle payments from one use
r to another via a path of intermediaries\, are a growing area of research
. They overcome the scalability issues in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin an
d Ethereum by replacing expensive and slow on-chain blockchain operations
with inexpensive and fast off-chain transfers. In the form of credit netwo
rks such as Ripple and Stellar\, they also enable low-price real-time gros
 s settlements across different currencies.\n \nIn this talk\, I will desc
ribe security and privacy challenges that must be tackled when realizing a
PBT. I will also present the solutions that we proposed for some of these
challenges. Interestingly\, our current results show the impossibility of
achieving all security and privacy properties of interest simultaneously\
, having thereby solutions that provide a tradeoff between security\, priv
acy and performance.\n\nBio:\nPedro Moreno-Sanchez is a fifth year PhD stu
dent in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University\, which is
located in the state of Indiana (USA). His advisor is Aniket Kate. Before
moving to Purdue University in August 2015\, he started his PhD studies a
t Saarland University in April 2013 under the supervision of Aniket Kate.\
n \nHe has been an intern research at IBM Research - Zurich (Switzerland)
in 2017 under the supervision of Christian Cachin\; at Ripple (USA) in 20
16 under the supervision of Stefan Thomas\; and at Philips Research Europe
(The Netherlands) under the supervision of Oscar Garcia-Morchon and Rafae
l Marin-Lopez. He received his bachelors and masters from the University o
f Murcia (UM) (Spain) in 2011 and 2013 respectively.\n\nMore information
