DESCRIPTION:Dr Mikko Möttönen\, Aalto University\nAbstract: Supercondu
ctivity was discovered a century ago and yet has found its way to many tec
hnological applications ranging from brain imaging to studies of the cosmi
c microwave background. However\, the most revolutionary applications are
at the horizon and will be provided by the rise of quantum technology. For
example\, the superconducting quantum computer has great potential to bec
ome a useful computational device. I will discuss the recent developments
of the Quantum Computing and Devices group at Aalto University in this fie
ld. Namely\, I will present a nanobolometer with an order of magnitude low
er noise compared with the present state of the art. Furthermore\, I prese
nt a quantum-circuit refrigerator that can be used to directly cool down s
uperconducting electric circuits at will. Finally\, I show our plans in im
proving and applying the bolometer and the refrigerator. Importantly\, we
plan to build a superconducting quantum computer with integrated cooling e
lements for fast and accurate qubit initialization.
