DESCRIPTION:Dr. Yurii Vlasov\nInstitute of Microengineering - Distinguishe
d Lecture\n\nAbstract: I will discuss the challenges and excitement of bui
lding large interdisciplinary programs with potentially high impact. I wil
l start with the Silicon Nanophotonics project I started at IBM almost two
decades ago and developed it from early fundamental research stage to com
mercial manufacturing technology\, I will focus then on my current effort
in neurotechnology aimed at reverse-engineering the brain circuits and dev
eloping advanced brain-machine interfaces. Development of implantable sili
con neuroprobes\, neurobiology experiments in virtual reality\, and AI-bas
ed neuroinformatics will be discussed.\n\nBio: Dr. Yurii Vlasov is a Grain
ger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative (GEBI) Founder Professor at the U
niversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is tenured with the departme
nts of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, Materials Science and Enginee
ring\, and Bio-Engineering\, as well as Carle Illinois College of Medicine
. At the UIUC he established Integrated Neurotechnology lab that combines
nanofabrication of electrical/optical/microfluidic neural probes to interr
ogate brain circuits with the neurobiology experiments in virtual reality
with the goal to reverse-engineer the brain circuits.\n \nPrior to joinin
g the UIUC\, Dr. Vlasov held various research and managerial positions at
the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in N.Y. where he led broad company-wid
e efforts in integrated silicon nanophotonics and more recently in neuromo
rphic computing architectures. He initiated the Silicon Nanophotonics proj
ect in 2001 and managed it for over 15 years from its early fundamental re
search stage up to commercial manufacturing of optical transceivers for la
rge-scale datacenters and supercomputers. Technology is currently deployed
by GlobalFoundries for commercial manufacturing. \n \nPrior to IBM\, Dr
. Vlasov developed semiconductor nanophotonics at the N.E.C. Research Inst
itute in Princeton\, N.J. and at the Strasbourg IPCMS Institute in France.
For over a decade\, he was also a Research Scientist with the Ioffe Insti
tute of Physics and Technology in St. Petersburg\, Russia working on optic
s of nanostructured semiconductors. He received his M.S. from the Universi
ty of St. Petersburg (1988) and Ph.D from the Ioffe Institute (1994)\, bot
 h in physics.
