DESCRIPTION:Dr. I. Hanusová\, SÚRAO\nThe effective isolation of high-lev
el radioactive waste emplaced in deep geological repositories is based upo
n the multi-barrier principle (the KBS-3V concept). It is assumed that ben
tonites and montmorillonitic clays\, which will be used as the buffer and
backfill material\, will provide for the stabilisation and mechanical prot
ection of the container\, limit advective transfer\, reduce the migration
of radionuclides and microbial activity and be resistant to chemical trans
formation and alteration.\nExtensive research is currently being performed
on Czech bentonites and montmorillonitic clays. Indeed\, one of the most
important tasks for the period 2018 – 2025 will be to verify whether it
will be feasible to employ bentonites extracted from Czech deposits (Rokle
\, Černý Vrch etc.) as the buffer and backfill materials for the future
Czech DGR.\nTherefore\, a number of laboratory and in-situ experiments are
underway at two Czech underground laboratories with different rock enviro
nments (the Josef URC and the Bukov URF).
