DESCRIPTION:Prof. Laloui is the organizer of the prestigious Geotechnique 
 Symposium in Print 2013 on “Bio- and Chemo- Mechanical Processes in Geot
 echnical Engineering. In recent years substantial advances have been made
  in understanding the coupling between chemical and biological processes a
 nd mechanical and hydraulic behaviours in soils and rocks. At the same tim
 e\, experimentation and modelling capabilities have progressed significant
 ly\, allowing effective design of geotechnical applications. The need for
  such analyses arises (for example) in chemical and biological soil improv
 ement\; nuclear\, hazardous and municipal waste containment\; petroleum an
 d natural gas extraction\; methane hydrate exploitation\; CO2 sequestratio
 n\; and assessment of pavement durability. This symposium will provide a f
 orum to take stock of different approaches to the experimental characteris
 ation\, constitutive modelling and design/monitoring of geotechnical engin
 eering applications.
