DESCRIPTION:Arvid Kappas is professor of psychology and dean at Jacobs Uni
versity Bremen.\nBio: Arvid Kappas has been conducting research on emotion
s for over three decades. After obtaining his Ph.D. at Dartmouth College i
n the USA in 1989\, he has lived and worked in Switzerland\, Canada\, the
UK\, and Germany\, as well as holding visiting positions in Italy and Aust
ria. He is a specialist in the scientific study of how people interact and
communicate\, specifically nonverbal communication and psychophysiology.
Recently he has become interested in the interaction of humans and machine
s\, particularly affective computing and social robotics. He was the presi
dent of the International Society for Research on Emotion (ISRE) from 2013
-2018\, is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science\, as well
as the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and in the executive
committee of the Association for the Advancement of Affective Computing.
One of his current research activities is with the EU-funded project ANIMA
TAS that focuses on advancing intuitive human-machine interaction with hum
an-like social capabilities for education in schools.\nWhile technology ha
s been an important part of education for decades\, recent developments in
ICT have provided radical new technologies\, such as virtual- and augment
ed reality\, networked learning platforms for individuals or large groups\
, or physically embodied devices that contribute to learning. Typically\,
such technologies are used\, in schools\, universities\, or companies toge
ther with teachers who plan and supervise the use of technology.\n\nHoweve
r\, what if technology becomes the teacher? I will discuss potentials of a
utonomous robots as teachers or tutors with examples from the EMOTE projec
 t. Specifically\, I focus on the importance of emotional intelligence for
such systems\, with regard to using information about the affective state
of the learner to modify didactics and providing affective cues to the lea
rner with the goal to create a social relationship between learner and rob
 ot.
