 , Spain\nAcoustic metamaterials are artificial structures made of subwavel
 ength units with novel properties in comparison with the acoustic material
 s found in nature. For example  acoustic metamaterials with anisotropic ma
 ss density have been proposed and employed to design acoustic cloaks. I wi
 ll review our homogenization theory to obtain the effective parameters of 
 acoustic metamaterials based on two-dimensional arrays of solid cylinders.
  I will also report different engineering procedures for obtaining anisotr
 opic metamaterials and their characterization in the sonic domain. Though 
 the construction of acoustic cloaks still remains a challenge  an acoustic
  cloak for airborne sound based on inverse design will be presented. Final
 ly  I will introduce a new type of crystalline structures called Radial So
 nic Crystals  which are only realizable with specific anisotropic metamate
 rials.
