DESCRIPTION:Isabella Crespi (University of Macerata & Centre d'Ontologie
Sociale de l'EPFL)\nThe Brownbag Ontology Workshop of Lausanne will hold i
ts 3rd monthly meeting on Wednesday 25th April from 12h15 until 13h45.\n\
nSandwiches and soft drinks will be available.\n\nAbstract: The concept of
intersectionality (Crenshaw 1989\; McCall 2005\, Walby 2007)\, originatin
g from black feminist theory\, has become within the last decade a broad i
nterdisciplinary heuristics for analyzing interlocking social divisions: r
ace\, class\, gender and other differences are no longer seen in isolation
or in cumulative models but in their mutual constitution and complex enta
nglements\, especially looking at the migration processes and changing gen
der roles. It has been recognized as a critical tool that addresses the sh
ortcomings of identity-based theories and advocates new avenues for empiri
cal or quantitative research within politics\, seeing intersectionality no
t only as a powerful normative theoretical argument but also as an approac
h to conducting empirical research that “emphasizes the interaction of c
ategories of difference” (Hancock 2007\, 63). This heuristics suggests t
hat—and seeks to examine how—various socially and culturally construct
ed categories such as gender\, race\, class\, disability\, and other axes
of identity interact on multiple and often simultaneous levels\, contribut
ing to systematic social inequality (Shields 2008\; Alcoff 2006\; Nash 200
8). Intersectionality as an approach\, in contrast with unitary and multip
le research approaches\, recognizes that categories matter equally but doe
s not determine a priori the relationship between these competing/compleme
nting categories. Furthermore it recognizes that these categories are not
static but that a dynamic interaction between individual and institutional
factors is at play\, a relation between structure\, agency and reflexivit
y (Archer 2003\, 2010). Surely\, to adopt an intersectionality perspective
allows a deeper way of analyzing different aspects taking in account soci
al complexities of new life trajectories in the experience of people (migr
 ants\, transnational families\, work-family balance\, and so on). Neverthe
less\, difficulties arise due to the many complexities involved in making
"multidimensional conceptualizations“ (Browne and Misra 2007) that expla
in the way in which socially constructed categories of differentiation int
eract to create a social hierarchy. In my project the theoretical aim is t
o evaluate the possible connections among critical realism\, morphogenetic
and relational sociological approaches and the intersectionality perspect
ive especially in order to improve and to better explain in the latter per
spective the hidden relevance of social differentiation\, identity politic
 s\, agency and reflexivity.
