 biocide that is used as an additive in many consumer products such as hand
  soaps\, toothpastes\, and cleaning supplies.  With few exceptions\, the 
 health benefits of using triclosan containing personal care products have 
 not been clearly established. There are concerns that triclosan may act as
  an endocrine disruptor and the US Food and Drug Administration is current
 ly reviewing the safety of triclosan.1 Given that triclosan is produced in
  large quantities globally\, and that a large proportion of the end-use pr
 oducts is disposed of in residential drains\, it is not surprising that tr
 iclosan and related degradation products are routinely found in natural wa
 ters.2 Triclosan has been shown to be very susceptible to photodegradation
  and this has been shown as the predominant sink for this compound.  Howe
 ver\, the photoproducts generated from the photolysis of triclosan can inc
 lude compounds such as dioxins and poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).  Th
 is talk will focus on the experimental and theoretical results from our gr
 oup that yield insights into the photophysics of triclosan and the mechani
 sms of photodegradation.
