DESCRIPTION:Prof. Hala Zreiqat\, University of Sydney (AUS)\nBIOENGINEERIN
G SEMINAR\n\nAbstract:\nThe repair and regeneration of large bone defects
under load has remained a major clinical challenge for orthopaedic surgeon
 s. In addition\, the development of suitable synthetic scaffolds for use a
s tendon and ligament (T/L) prosthesis to treat T/L ruptures remains a sig
nificant challenge. This presentation will describe our strategies in synt
hetic platform to develop cell-free therapeutics to promoting bone and ten
don regeneration in these challenging situations.\nThis presentation will
discuss our three dimensional (3D) printed ceramic scaffold and their effi
cacy in treating large bone defects under load. Moreover\, we demonstrated
that manipulating pore size and permeability\, as a function of scaffold
architecture\, provides a useful strategy for enhancing bone regeneration
outcomes.  The presentation will discuss our engineering solution to deve
lop synthetic T/L prostheses\, based on fibre-reinforced hydrogels that mi
mic the hierarchical structure of the native human tendon.  The compositi
on of this new tendon and ligament allows for high strength and good in vi
vo tissue integration.\nOur technologies open avenues for skeletal and sof
t tissue regeneration in various clinical applications.\n\nBio:\nHala Zrei
qat is a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Sydney a
nd both a National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fel
low (2016-2020)\; Director of the Australian Research Training Centre for
Innovative Bio-Engineering\; Co-Director of the Shanghai-Sydney Joint Bioe
ngineering and Regenerative Medicine Lab at Shanghai JiaoTong\; Honorary P
rofessor Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Adjunct Professor Drexel Univer
sity. She is the 2018 New South Wales Premier’s Woman of the Year.\nHer
research is on the development of novel engineered materials and 3D-printe
d platforms for regenerative medicine\, particularly in orthopaedic\, dent
al\, and maxillofacial applications. She has established national and inte
rnational industry collaborations to translate her discoveries into approv
ed medical devices. Her pioneering development of innovative biomaterials
for tissue regeneration has led to one awarded (US) and 7 provisional pate
nts\, and several collaborations with inter/national industry partners.
She has been awarded more than $17 M in competitive funding including from
the NHMRC\, ARC and the NSW Medical Devices Fund. She is the past preside
nt of the Australian & New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society\; founder
and Chair of the Alliance for Design and Application in Tissue Engineering
(ADATE) (2006-present)\; founder of IDEAL Society (Inclusion\, Diversity\
, Equity\, Action Leadership) at Harvard University (October 2017-)\; memb
er of the National Health and Medical Research Senior Research grant revie
w panel\, the Australian Research Council Expert College and German Resear
ch Foundation. Prof. Zreiqat’s overall objective is to advance collabora
tive research ventures and build educational and industry linkages nationa
lly and internationally in the field of musculoskeletal disorders and biom
 aterials research.
