DESCRIPTION:Claudio Grimaldi\, Laboratory of Physics of Complex Matter\, E
PFL\nThe discovery of thousands of extrasolar planets and the inferred ast
ronomical number of Earth-like planets in the Galaxy have recently fueled
an intense activity in Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Th
e “Breakthrough Listen” initiative\, the largest and most comprehensiv
e search ever\, and other ongoing and upcoming SETI research programs in t
he radio and optical spectrum offer the unprecedented opportunity of a sys
tematic investigation in the vast domain of the SETI search space. I will
give an overview of SETI and discuss its “physics” from the viewpoint
 of a condensed matter physicist.
