DESCRIPTION:The so-called "rare subjects" often represent a comprehensive\
 , significant and future oriented canon of knowledge of high relevance for
  interdisciplinarity\, internationality\, and innovation. At the same time
 \, these knowledge domains are often characterized by precarious structure
 s inside the universities.\n \nWith the programme World Knowledge\, the V
 olkswagen Stiftung (VWS):\n\n	Welcomes proposals to strengthen "rare subje
 cts" in any thematic area that wish to pursue or strive for interdisciplin
 ary and international networking and with a high potential for innovation\
 , in both research and teaching.\n	Encourages Professors (full or associat
 ed) to develop innovative ideas for structurally strengthening their fiel
 ds and\n	Invites the respective university leadership to create sustainabl
 e perspectives for the research and teaching of the “rare subjects” fo
 r at least 10 years after the end of VWS funding.\n\n \nApplicants must s
 elect a combination of measures aimed at strengthening a “rare subject
 ” in research & teaching\, for example:\n\n\n	Teaching collaborations\n	
 Guest lectures by international researchers or non-university experts\n	Ne
 tworking activities with actors external to the academic field\n	New teach
 ing formats\n	Leave of absence and\n	Staff positions for mid-level faculty
  or professors.\n\n \nWho can apply:\n\n\n	Professors (full or associated
 ) + university management\n	Swiss applicants are eligible for funding\, bu
 t must apply with a German institution as lead.\n\n \nFunding & Duration:
 \n\n\n	Max. EUR 1 Million for up to 7 years.\n	Shortlisted applicants can 
 also apply for EUR 10’000 to prepare the full proposal.\n	Additional EUR
  250’000 may be requested to fund teaching modules.\n	The university con
 cerned is expected to contribute matching funds (no max. or lower limit).\
 n	Overheads and equipment are NOT eligible costs.\n\n \nDeadlines for out
 line proposals: 16 September 2019 and 16 September 2020\n\n\n	Application

 t\; Detailed Letter of Support from the university leadership\; Explanatio
 n of the status as a “rare subject” (max. 2 pages)\; CVs\; Cover sheet

 d of Trustees decides based on the recommendations of international expert
 s.\n	Only shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal
