DESCRIPTION:Danica Porobic is a Principal Member of Technical Staff at Or
acle working on the in-memory technologies in the database team. She recei
ved her PhD from EPFL where she focused on designing scalable transaction
processing systems for non-uniform hardware. She has graduated top of her
class with MSc and BSc in Informatics from University of Novi Sad and has
worked at Oracle Labs and Microsoft SQL Server.\nAbstract:  Database arch
itectures are fundamentally changing due to new technologies and new requi
rements. Oracle database takes advantage of these new technologies without
requiring application changes while at the same time enabling new types o
f applications. One such transformational technology is Database In-Memory
which adds in-memory functionality for transparently accelerating analyti
c queries by orders of magnitude\, enabling real-time business decisions.
This technology accelerates both Data Warehouses and mixed workload OLTP d
atabases using an in-memory columnar format utilizing techniques such as S
IMD vector processing\, in-memory storage indexes\, and optimized predicat
e evaluation and aggregation. This talk gives brief overview of the Oracle
Database architecture\, highlights design choices behind Database In-Memo
ry and the new functionality it enables.\n
