 are 20200 possible amino-acid sequences for a 200-residue protein\, of whi
 ch the natural evolutionary process has sampled only an infinitesimal subs
 et. De novo protein design explores the full sequence space\, guided by th
 e physical principles that underlie protein folding. Computational methodo
 logy has advanced to the point that a wide range of structures can be desi
 gned from scratch with atomic-level accuracy. Almost all protein engineeri
 ng so far has involved the modification of naturally occurring proteins\; 
 it should now be possible to design new functional proteins from the groun
 d up to tackle current challenges in biomedicine and nanotechnology.\n\nBi
 o:\nDavid Baker is Professor of Biochemistry\, Director of the Institute f
 or Protein Design\, Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute\, 
 and adjunct professor of Genome Sciences\, Bioengineering\, Chemical Engin
 eering\, Computer Science\, and Physics at the University of Washington. H
 e received his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry with Randy Schekman at the Uni
 versity of California\, Berkeley and did postdoctoral work in biophysics w
 ith David Agard at UCSF. His research group is focused on the prediction a
 nd design of macromolecular structures\, interactions and functions. Dr. B
 aker received young investigator awards from the National Science Foundati
 on and the Beckman Foundation\, and the Packard Foundation fellowship in S
 cience and Engineering. He has also received the Irving Sigal Young Invest
 igator award from the Protein Society and the Overton Prize from the Inter
 national Society of Computational Biology. He is a recipient of the Feynma
 n Prize from the Foresight Institute\, the AAAS Newcomb_Cleveland prize\, 
 the Sackler prize in biophysics\, and the Centenary award from the Biochem
 ical society. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the A
 merican Academy of Sciences. His research group is a world leader in compu
 tational protein design and protein structure prediction.
