DESCRIPTION:Aim: Through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Pro
gram (CDMRP)\, the Department of Defense is announcing the Reconstructive
Transplant Research Program (RTRP) for 2018. The Investigator-Initiated Re
search Award supports studies that have the potential to make an important
contribution to reconstructive transplant research\, patient care\, and/o
r quality of life. Though the mechanism supports groundbreaking research\,
all projects must demonstrate solid scientific rationale with military-re
levant utility. Multi-institutional collaborations among clinicians and re
search scientists are encouraged.\n \nThe RTRP challenges the scientific
community to design innovative research that will foster new directions fo
r\, and address neglected issues in\, the field of reconstructive transpla
ntation\, specifically vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA)-fo
cused research\, also known as composite tissue allotransplantation. VCA r
efers to the transplantation of multiple tissues such as muscle\, bone\, n
erve\, and skin\, as a functional unit (e.g.\, a hand or face) from a dece
ased donor to a recipient with a severe injury. The ultimate goal is to re
turn injured Service members to duty and restore their quality of life.\n
\nTo meet the intent of the Investigator-Initiated Research Award mechan
ism\, applicants must address at least one of the FY18 RTRP Focus Areas. T
hese focus areas are listed at the end of this announcement.\n \nFunding:
        Maximum USD $ 1M (Single PI)\n
       Maximum USD $ 1.5M (Multiple PIs)\n \nDuration:      3 yea
rs\n \nEligibility: Applicants from international organizations or instit
utions are eligible to apply\, and there are no citizenship restrictions.
Independent investigators at all academic levels are eligible to submit ap
plications.\n \nThis mechanism includes an option for up to four PIs. One
PI will be identified as the Initiating PI and will be responsible for th
e majority of the administrative tasks associated with application submiss
ion. The other PI(s) will be designated Partnering PI(s).\n \nHow to Appl
y: Pre-applications are submitted through the eBRAP platform. They should
contain contact information\, a list of collaborators and key personnel\,
a preproposal narrative\, and supporting documents as suggested on the pla
tform. Full applications (by invitation) will be made via a Grants.gov wor
kspace. Full application packages can be downloaded from Grants.gov at any
  time.\n \nPre-Application Deadline: 15 August 2018\, 5:00 p.m. EST (23:0
 0 CET)\nFull Application Deadline: 24 October 2018\, 11:59 p.m. EST (05:59
  25 Oct\, CET)\n \nGrants.gov Funding Opportunity Number: W81XWH-18-RTRP-
 IIRA\n \nFurther information\n\n	To see the program announcement\, naviga
te to the search page on Grants.gov and search for the Opportunity Number
W81XWH-18-RTRP-IIRA.\n	For questions about the eBRAP or Grants.gov platfo
 rms\, contact the Research Office.\n\n \nRTRP Focus Areas FY18\n \n\n	R
educe the risks of vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA)-associ
ated immunotherapy\n	Revolutionize ex vivo VCA tissue preservation strateg
ies to extend the timeline between procurement and transplantation\n	Ident
ify near- and long-term functional\, quality-of-life\, and psychosocial ou
tcomes in VCA\, and their influencing factors\n
