DESCRIPTION:Yelena Mejova\n\nThe scale and complexity of the traces of hum
an behavior captured on the web has been a useful resource for tracking di
sease\, pushing the lag of conventional health tracking to more real-time
"now-casting". These signals provide a rich source of information about th
e context of people's health conditions\, revealing their cultural\, socia
l\, and personal attitudes and behaviors\, making social media data especi
ally useful for understanding lifestyle diseases\, such as obesity and dia
betes -- conditions that claim more lives than infectious diseases worldwi
de. This talk will discuss the latest findings in lifestyle disease tracki
ng via large social media collections encompassing population and individu
al scales.\n\nYelena Mejova (@yelenamejova) is a Research Leader at the I
SI Foundation in Turin\, Italy\, a part of the Digital Epidemiology group
(previously\, a scientist at the Qatar Computing Research Institute\, Qata
r). Specializing in social media analysis and mining\, her work concerns t
he quantification of health and wellbeing signals in social media\, as wel
l as tracking of social phenomena\, including politics and news consumptio
 n. Recently\, she co-edited a volume on the use of Twitter for social scie
nce in Twitter: A Digital Socioscope\, and a special issue of Social Scien
ce Computer Review on Quantifying Politics Using Online Data. Previously\,
as a postdoctoral member of the Web Mining team at Yahoo! Research Barcel
ona\, Yelena participated in the Linguistically Motivated Semantic Aggrega
tion Engines (LiMoSINe) EU project. The design and evaluation of the resul
ting entity-based exploratory search system has been awarded the Best Pape
r Award at the ACM Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIK
 M) in 2013. Also\, Yelena has published widely on sentiment analysis and i
ts application to social media and political speech. She has given talks o
n the subject internationally\, including Yandex’s Yet Another Conferenc
