DESCRIPTION:Prof. Eran Sharon\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem\nAbstract:\
nBy combining the theory of incompatible elastic sheets with chemical anal
ysis we introduce a new paradigm for the modeling and analysis of nano-sca
le self-assembled solid sheets. Analysis of molecular interactions provide
s inputs to the elastic model\, which determines the supramolecular struct
ure and its thermal fluctuations.\nThe approach is demonstrated in a combi
 ned experimental-theoretical study of nano-scale self-assembled ribbons\,
made of lipids and peptides with chiral head groups. We analytically deriv
e quantitative predictions for ribbons configurations and shape fluctuatio
ns. These are confirmed experimentally\, revealing unusual mechanics and s
tatistics\, indicating that the shape and mechanics of the suprasturacture
s are governed by geometrical incompatibility.\n\nBio:\nEran Sharon is a p
rofessor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem\, conducting experimental s
tudies of different pattern forming systems. In particular\, his research
is focused on the mechanical instabilities in residually stressed bodies\,
mechanics of growth in plants\, and instabilities in fluids under rotatio
 n.
