DESCRIPTION:Pr. S. Savaresi\, Department of Electronics and Information\,
 Politecnico di Milano\, Italy.\nThe traveling range is a key-performance i
ndicator for an electric vehicle. As a matter of fact\, the high-cost of t
he battery pack\, the limited availability of recharging stations\, and th
e large recharging-time make this parameter extremely critical for the dai
ly usage of an electric vehicle. Traditionally\, the vehicles are equipped
  with “range-estimators”: algorithms\, which try to make a real-time p
rediction of the residual traveling range.\nIn the seminar a completely di
fferent approach will be proposed and briefly discussed: the closed-loop c
ontrol of the range. According to this approach\, a desired discharge prof
ile is tracked (as a function of the traveling distance)\, and the drive-s
tyle (condensed in a single variable) is used as control variable. The res
ult is a guaranteed traveling-distance\, with minimum impact of the vehicl
e performances. \nThis approach has been demonstrated with experimental re
sults on a small electric vehicle.
